For this chocolate orange marble cake, we enlisted my Nan and her incredible baking skills! She’s a real baking whizz, always whipping up something amazing to finish off a Sunday dinner with, so we couldn’t wait to have one of her recipes featured on FOOD4FEAST.
This chocolate orange marble cake recipe is a slight variation of a family favourite: chocolate and vanilla marble cake. For Halloween however, we wanted a cake that looked the part (anyone else see the pumpkin resemblance?!) and tasted delicious, and with my Nan’s help, that’s exactly what we got!
For the orange half, we used orange zest for flavour. Yep, just the zest! The zest creates such a fresh and fragrant flavour, which combines well with the rich cocoa powder used for the chocolate half. When eaten together, you get a perfect hit of both flavours!
The bake itself is really easy; just a simple sponge recipe, separated and flavoured, then layered and baked. You can have fun with the marbling effect too! It doesn’t need to be perfect or neat, just layer using alternating spoonfuls of flavours. We aren’t perfectionists by any stretch of the imagination, so each slice being unique is the kind of baking we like!
With a family member intolerant to gluten, we’ve inadvertently discovered that in some cases, gluten free flour makes the best bakes! We honestly think it takes sponge to a different level as it almost melts in the mouth. While you don’t have to use gluten free flour, we seriously recommend if you want that silky texture.
Even though we’ve made and decorated it for Halloween, it truly is a cake that can be enjoyed any time of the year!

CHOCOLATE ORANGE MARBLE CAKE
- Large ring mould tin
- 250 g Gluten free flour
- 1/4 tsp xanthan gum
- 250 g butter extra for greasing
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 2 drops vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp milk
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/2 zest of a large orange
- 4 eggs
- Orange food colouring gel Add to desired colour
- preheat the oven to gas mark 4/180°C/350°F.
- Using a clean cloth or tissue, grease the ring mould tin thoroughly with butter, making sure that every part of it is thoroughly greased as it can stick.
- In a large mixing bowl add all of the ingredients except the milk, cocoa powder and orange zest. mix thoroughly together, either using a electric whisk or wooden spoon.
- Once it is mixed together well, roughly divide the mix into two separate bowls, Flavouring one with the cocoa powder, adding the 1 tablespoon of milk and then the other with the orange zest and orange food colouring gel (add enough to reach your desired orange colour). Mix both well.
- Using a large spoon, drop spoonfuls of each mixture into the tin, creating a marble effect. Once all of both mixtures are added, bake for around 35-40 minutes or until cooked through.
- Once the cake is baked, leave to cool slightly for 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool further.
